In order to get the benefit of well trained and informed staff (see Training), Ship Operators need to provide identical or at least equivalent shore side facilities onboard for vessel staff including:
• Internet
• E-mail
• Phone (satellite or GSM)
• SMS (satellite or GSM)
• Local News from home
• Vocational and non-vocational study aids to enhance the seafarers career and life enjoyment.
In a recent independent survey of seafarers, access to the internet was reported as the highest requirement but least available facility onboard today. The ability to use mobile phones onboard and access to content came second and third respectively.
Ship operators are reticent to provide online / internet facilities as they are bandwidth intensive and there is a constant security and virus concern even with VPN, Firewall and trusted site security systems in place.
Infonic Geo-Replicator (GR) can provide an offline experience to the vessel staff for Internet, News from Home and Study courses.
When GR is implemented, staff are unaware that they are offline as the data / site access is in the same form and format (Internet Explorer for instance), as if they were connected. Course and feedback forms can be accommodated and transmitted ashore in near real time.
GR can deliver to the ship operator motivated and contented staff, aiding retention whilst not exposing the onboard ITC infrastructure to outside threats or bandwidth restrictions.

Odfjell has purchased Infonic’s Geo-Replicator network acceleration software for deployment across its 60-strong fleet to deliver two-way ship to shore updating of its Quality and Safety Management System (QSMS).
